Before returning to academia in 2011, Dr. Josh Browne spent 18 years as a mechanical engineer in the automotive industry, with most of his time spent in professional motorsports.  Josh specialized in dynamic systems modeling, with a focus on racecar performance optimization.  Josh’s roles included racecar vehicle model development and application, racecar engineering, and engineering management.  Josh was also a crew chief in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

In 2012, Josh co-founded Rho AI, a data science company with roots in professional motorsports.  Rho AI’s current focus is on applying machine learning and artificial intelligence to solving impact problems in the waste, water, and energy industries. At Columbia, Josh teaches a course in vehicle dynamics, and advises the Columbia Formula SAE team.

Dr. Browne received his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1993, MS in Mechanical Engineering from Oakland University in 1995, and PhD in Earth & Environmental Engineering under Dr. Klaus Lackner from Columbia University in 2016.
